Our Rotation
The South Yorkshire trauma and orthopaedic specialist training rotation provides training in all orthopaedic subspecialties including :
- Arthroplasty and revision arthroplasty
- Foot and ankle
- Hand and wrist surgery
- Limb reconstruction
- Paediatric orthopaedics
- Pelvic reconstruction
- Shoulder and elbow surgery
- Soft tissue knee surgery
- Spinal surgery
- Trauma surgery
- Young adult hip surgery
We sit within NHSEngland Workforce, Training and Education Yorkshire and the Humber. The training rotation is geographically compact and includes training at the following NHS Trusts:
- Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
- The Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
- The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust
- Sheffield Children's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
- Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Mock FRCS Exams
FRCS mock exams
We run four mock FRCS exams annually, which are themed:
- Main mock - usually the first Friday in February
- Paediatrics - usually the first Friday in May
- Upper limb - usually the first Friday in October
- Lower Limb - usually the first Friday in December
Exam format
- The mock exams are based on the real FRCS trauma & orthopaedic surgery examination. Each candidate will face a mixture of intermediate clinical cases with a volunteer patient over 15 minutes and a series of three, five minute viva examination cases on a screen. There may be several rounds of both.
- Please attend in good time for the examination, which will be held at one of the five rotational Trusts.
- The examination usually starts promptly at 1400, so as a candidate please be present from 1330. The session usually finishes by 1700.
- Marking is electronic and the candidates marks are emailed to them with development feedback from the examiners within the week following the exam.
- As the exams reflect the standard and form of the actual FRCS examination, they are an excellent opportunity to experience these before taking the actual FRCS examination in ST6-7. Repeated mock exam exposure really reduces the stress experienced in the actual exam. Those who pass at least one mock exam prior to their actual FRCS (Tr&Orth) exam are much more likely to be successful at the real examination.
Advice for examiners
- Please attend the examination site early in order to attend the examiners briefing.
- Please bring a device with you for displaying your examination questions.
- A second device is helpful for electronic marking, which may be done on a smart phone, tablet, laptop or PC. It is done through a web link which will be sent to you prior to the exam by email.
- Please mark the candidates at the expected level of a day-one general orthopaedic Consultant, which is the level of the actual FRCS (Tr&Orth) examination.
